Bunions cause discomfort and pain for many adults, often becoming inflamed and irritated throughout the day as they rub against the inside of your shoes. Simply standing or walking around can be uncomfortable when you have a bunion! The good news is that you don't have to suffer anymore—if you are struggling with bunions, we can help! At Adult & Child Footcare in both Toms River and Shrewsbury, NJ, Dr. William Sachs is your podiatrist for bunion treatment.

How Bunions Develop

Bunions develop when the joint of the big toe moves out of place, shifting toward the other toes. This, in turn, pushes the bone on the big toe side of the foot outward, forming a protrusion called a bunion. Since bunions protrude outward, they readily rub against the inside of the shoes, resulting in friction, inflammation, and irritation, which can cause significant pain and discomfort that grows progressively worse throughout the day.

Treatments for Bunions

There are several different ways that we treat bunions here at our Toms River and Shrewsbury offices. Some treatment methods work by cushioning the bunion to minimize friction when wearing footwear. Minimizing friction helps prevent inflammation and irritation of the bunion area, which can ultimately alleviate pain and discomfort. Other treatment methods involve realigning the toe joint, which can improve functionality. In more serious cases, a podiatrist can surgically remove the bunion. Some of the other methods for treating bunions at Adult & Child Footcare include:

  • Wearing roomier footwear that fits properly
  • Stabilizing the toe joint with orthotic shoe inserts
  • Improving joint functionality with foot exercises
  • Reducing friction with protective padding to cushion the foot
  • Realigning the toe joint with a splint worn at night
  • Surgically removing the bunion
