Common Foot Conditions and How We Can Help

Many of us will experience foot pain or ailments in our lifetime, and while uncomfortable most are highly treatable. At Adult & Child bunionsFootcare, LLC, in Toms River and Shrewsbury, NJ, podiatrist, Dr. William Sachs offers treatment for bunions, ingrown toenails, warts and more. Here's how we can help:

Bunions

Bunions are bony bumps found on the big toe which cause pain, swelling, and pressure. Bunions can become especially sensitive when you are wearing shoes or walking. Bunions may develop due to wearing shoes that are improperly fitting, or if you have a medical condition such as arthritis. You may also have a genetic predisposition to bunions.

At our office, we can recommend at-home or in-office treatments for bunions. Making sure to choose footwear that is not too small or narrow can help, as can icing the area or applying special cushioning pads you can find at the drugstore. If you need further help for your bunions, we may suggest surgical treatment to correct this bunion deformity. This would involve realigning the bones, ligaments and tendons in the affected toe so it can return to its normal position.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails can result from ill-fitting shoes, cutting your toenails too short or you have a genetic predisposition. An ingrown toenail is caused when the nail becomes imbedded into the side of your toe, and puts it at risk for infection, swelling, redness, and intense pain.

The professionals at our office may suggest soaking the nail in warm water, using an antibiotic ointment, taking an over the counter pain reliever, and wearing suitable shoes. If you are still experiencing problems, we may opt to remove a portion of the nail, and in case of infection, prescribe an oral antibiotic.

Warts

Warts can be both unsightly and uncomfortable. They may be flat, scaly, thick or protruding and can develop from friction. At home, you can try soaking your foot, applying a salicylic acid treatment from your drugstore or lightly exfoliating the area. At our offices in Toms River or Shrewsbury, NJ, we also offer wart removal in the form of freezing, a mild acid application, or remove the warts with a laser treatment.
