More about bunions
Women suffer most from bunion pain. In fact, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, over half of the women in this country have suffered from bunion pain at some point. This is largely because women tend to wear more shoes that are too narrow, and high heels only add to the problem by pushing the toes forward.
The end result is that the toes are crushed together, often with the big toe joint being especially pushed outward. The friction of your toe pressing against the inside of your shoe then causes chronic irritation, inflammation, and eventually, distortion of the bones in your toe.
Prevention can go a long way when it comes to bunions. Always wear shoes that have enough toe room and provide good support. It’s also important to always wear the right footwear for the activity or sport you are doing in order to properly protect your toes and feet.
You can practice a few home remedies to help with minor bunion pain, as well, including:
- Placing an ice pack on the bunion several times during the day
- Using inserts or pads inside your shoes to cushion the bunion
- Taping your foot to support the bunion while you walk
- Taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory and pain medication
In the case of large, chronically painful bunions, you will require the help of your podiatrist. You will need a comprehensive examination of your feet and toes, including x-rays to determine the level of bone involvement in your bunion. After an examination, your podiatrist may recommend:
- Shaving the corns and calluses to reduce friction
- Stretching and physical therapy to increase flexibility
- Custom-fit orthotics, splints, or other devices to maintain alignment
- Surgical treatment to remove the bunion and realign your toe
